Merry-Go-Round Glasgow

Having helped run a social enterprise shop when I lived in the East end of Glasgow,  I am pretty passionate about them and what they can provide for people. Actually one of the first things I checked when I knew I was moving south was what similar projects were over there!

Merry-Go-Round in Glasgow’s southside is an institution for parents and parents to be. From their legendary big sales at the Briggait (including the invaluable fill a bag for a fiver table), to the drop in groups and sessions they provide for all aspects of parenting. Their shop is special place for so many people. From the moment I knew we were having Arthur we started popping in regularly to pick up bits and bobs along the way and in my maternity year when money was beyond tight, I would pick up as much as I could. I have also attended events from Drag Queen story time, to the breastfeeding clinic and the nappy club! I am so passionate about pretty much second hand anything and I love the feeling I get from saving something from landfill and giving it a new home. We have bought things from baby carriers to bottles to cloth nappies from the shop, it is pretty crazy that so far they have rehomed over 130 00 items, that is a whole 42 whole tonnes of stuff that would otherwise be in landfill.

I wanted to share my experiences with the organisation to encourage anyone who can to consider donating towards their huge new endeavor, an expansion to the Nithsdale Road store which will provide some much needed additional space for the parenting support classes they run, and allow them to stock even more bargains like the 50p crate sale items! The expansion also means they can provide more job opportunites for the local community, more volunteering positions and they are even hoping to be able to extend some of the opening hours.

Merry-Go-Round provides so much for their partnership families and this new space will mean they can do so much more for everyone who uses the facilities. Since 2012 they have managed to supply over 1500 families in need with free supplies and they want to help so many more. In order to achieve these big goals the hardworking team need a helping hand and they have been working so hard to drum up donations to help towards the project so they set up a go fund me page that you can find HERE. Anything you can contribute towards keeping this vital resource open and thriving will be so appreciated.

If you can't donate money right now you donations in the form of baby clothes and items will still be greatly received and you can check out the details of what they can accept HERE.

While the shops is closed currently for the refit you can still get shopping as they are holding a pop up shop in the old Curves Gym at Shawlands Arcade on Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th of June from 9.30 till 4.30.
