Edinburgh Reviewed; The Lush Spa

Thanks to years of blogging I have been lucky enough to get to check out some pretty amazing spas and salons across Scotland but every so often one comes along that is completely different and takes me by surprise. The Lush Spa in Edinburgh is just this kind of place.....

Lush Spa in Edinburgh - it's LUSH

Located incredibly handily on the bustling Princes Street and below a stunning store front jam packed with all your favourite Lush Products, this is a little piece of homely heaven that an incredible amount of care and planning has gone in to to make it just right. Based on the country home feeling of owner Mark Constantine the Lush spa is absolutely incredible.Greeted by a beautiful lounge sitting area, and the most welcoming and inviting kitchen dining table complete with mismatched bright colours chairs,  I couldn't believe all this could be happening just under the busiest street in the capital! I have seen a lot of gorgeous spa's with nice ambient atmosphere but never before have I actually wanted my own home to look identical. It was like walking into my dream home, complete with rustic touches and quirks that take so long to get just right without feeling over 'done'.

Lush Spa in Edinburgh - it's LUSH

I was shown around the treatment rooms by my wonderful therapist
Genna and was blown away by them, just like the communal areas the rooms make you feel instantly at home. The rooms can tailored to each kind of treatment in so many ways, from a bubble machine to different specially composed music, there is no stone unturned in making a lush spa experience one you will never forget.

The treatment I was having was the 'Validation Facial' which Lush summarise as;

"a sublime spectacle to refresh, stretch you and restore your confidence"

I was most definately intrigued by the concept. Genna first sat me down at the huge kitchen table to take some details and talk me through the experience, it was such a nice way to begin and I loved that she asked me to think of words to describe what I want to get out of my facial- how I wanted my skin to look and how I wanted to feel. It really made me feel 'special' and in a completely sincere way, with this place you could never feel like just another client or customer.  I could really tell Genna wanted me to get as much out of the time there as possible which was such a lovely personal touch.

We then headed off to the shop floor to tailor my facial to exactly my needs which was such a fun aspect. The facial consists of loads of different elements and I was amazed as we loaded up product after product on to the slate that was essentially my shopping basket for our trip! It was great to have someone as knowledgeable about the products as Genna talk me through my options and what would work best and give me that further VIP feeling. Once we had covered all the bases it was off to get settled into the treatment, but not before a little bit of magic in the form of some dry ice and fruit which was such an unexpected treat and turns out not only looks and smells good but then became a super refreshing after treatment drink infused with all the fruit goodness!

By the time we came to the actual facial itself I already felt like a total princess, I was completely sold on the experience before she had even touched my skin! The facial was exquisite, each product was applied with such care and attention that I was quickly lost in another world ( something I actually find really hard to do in treatments normally) gorgeous products and massage aside, the thing I was absolutely in love with was the music. Now that might not sound like the normal centrepiece for a facial but Lush really have created something special, hiring composer Simon Emmerson to create a special soundtrack that incorporates a blend of relaxing sounds and music with specially chosen words and phrases continuing throughout devised to lift you and boost your confidence. Now I know for some people that all sounds a bit  'soft' and when I first read about the treatment I was a little sceptical myself but it has to be tried to be believed. I was amazed by how much the music rested me and the facial movements are timed with swells in the music- it pretty much felt like I was experiencing a whole ballet being performed just for me and well... on me. The whole atmosphere the soundtrack creates really did take me to a slightly hypnotic state and I felt a genuine difference in how I felt following it. Of course the products and the techniques used gave me the glowing and youthful looking skin that I had said I was after- she even used elements of the Alexander technique during it which I loved as it has always interested me, and those touches were just another tool to help you walk a little taller when it is all done and make you feel more confident and empowered.

The aim of the facial aside from some seriously good looking skin is to make you feel better and uplifted and I was delighted that I felt just that. I didn't expect for the whole treatment to really be up my street as a fan of powerful, active ingredients facials normally but it was such a beautifully put together, natural experience that I was blown away by it.I think that a voucher for one of the treatments at the Lush Spa would make an truly magical gift for someone, this experience will stick with me for a long time and I am desperate to get back there asap and try The Good Hour- a massage based around the idea of sea shanties and pirates! From the little bell to ring when you are ready in your treatment room, to the bathroom all equipped with amazing Lush products to get you ready to face the world after your treatment- the Lush staff and Spa will go the extra mile to make sure your time with them is magical, memorable and beneficial in a whole manner of ways. It is a fantastic spa experience I cannot recommend highly enough.

To book you can call the Spa on 0131 225 4688 and check out their list of amazing treatments here. To find out more about the Validation Facial you can also watch this video- even hearing the music used now is sending me back to that hypnotic state- Enjoy!

Edinburgh Reviewed; the Aveda Spa at the Scotsman Hotel

I have always wanted to go into the Scotsman Hotel, something about its grand size and location in such an iconic city has always appealed to me. So of course I was thrilled to be offered the chance to go and have a look around and it did not disappoint! Since opening in 2001, this 5 star boutique hotel has been a unique residence for those visiting the capital, steeped in history and heritage (it was formerly home to the Scotsman newspaper) the hotel really is as breathtaking on the inside as it is outside and now their Spa has teamed up with Aveda to create the perfect den of tranquillity just off the bustling royal mile.

Aveda were chosen for their holistic approach to spa treatments, offering a superb line up of products backed by their ethical stance makes them the perfect partners for the spa. With treatments now rooted in Ayurveda, the  Indian healing tradition based on the knowledge of life and the interconnectedness of all things, clients really are in for a treat. Not only do you leave feeling relaxed and pampered but the treatments are designed to work on the mind and emotions too. On top of this stunning new treatment menu and relaxing treatment rooms, clients can also make use of the absolutely gorgeous stainless steel swimming pool and sauna and steam room facilities too- the full package for those looking for serious pampering.

I tried out the 45 minute Stress-Fix massage (£45) while I was there and was thoroughly impressed. Collected from my pool side spot, my therapist led me to my treatment room where she explained the massage in detail and found out about any trouble spots I would like her to focus on. The massage and oils used were heavenly, I loved that she would place her hand near my nose  so I could start and end the massage taking deep breaths and inhaling the relaxing aromas of lavender and clary sage, little touches such as this really forced me to relax ( something I often struggle with). Combining Swedish and Deep tissue massage and incorporating foot reflexology and acupressure points, the treatment was a perfect blend of calm and relaxation while still leaving me feel fresh and rejuvenated.

Something that was so different from anywhere I have been before was the attentional to detail in their relaxation room you are taken to after treatment. When you walk in your therapist pops you under a huge, soft duvet which was such a beautiful touch. I drifted right off ( with other people in the room all doing the same!) and thoroughly enjoyed that post treatment feeling to the max. On top of that I was poured a cup of the most stunning herbal tea I have ever had, I loved it so much I was straight on the email to the Spa's lovely manager Caroline the next day to find out what it was. It was actually Aveda's own specially mixed Comforting Tea which is a beautiful blend of peppermint, liquorice and basil- that might not sound right, but really it has to be tasted to be believed!

With Spa packages starting from only £60, the Aveda Spa is excellent value for money. They have worked hard to make sure every element of your visit is perfect- and is well worth checking out on your next trip to Edinburgh.

The Scottish Ballet present Hansel and Gretel

I am not actually seeing the Scottish Ballet's latest offering until the weekend, but I can tell you in advance it will be amazing. Nope, I have not gone all psychic, I just know from every single past experience that this company could just NEVER disappoint. I just wanted to spread the word for those planning their festive calenders now as it has been 6 years since their last brand new Christmas production, a total must-see! A trip to see Scottish Ballet is just the thing to get you and the family in the Christmas spirit. Full to the brim with festive magic, you are guaranteed to be taken on the most enchanting journey that is just not to be missed. From the choreography to the costumes, music to makeup, every tiny detail is perfected to ensure you have an experience you will never forget.

What I love about this years Christmas performance is that is was created not just by the wonderful Scottish Ballet but with help from people across Scotland. Using creative writing, art dance competitions, participants of all ages were able to not only develop their own skills but contribute to this revolutionary production.

Not only that but the company have added a specially adapted hour long performance, Wee Hansel and Gretel, especially for the young family audiences. An idea so popular they have already had to add a new Glasgow date for it! (for details and dates see here)

The Spa and Sparkle Package at the Guerlain Spa

Ahhh Guerlain.

Just knowing I am coming through your spa doors at the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh has me walking on clouds from the moment the appointment is booked. I am embarrassed to be the one running to you from Waverley Station pretty much undressing from the moment the train stops at the platform, desperate to be relaxing in those ridiculously soft robes whilst sipping on peppermint tea in your gorgeous relaxation room.  I seriously cannot get enough of this little haven of tranquillity and am always all ears when it comes to the the new treatments and packages they have on offer.

So of course I pretty much ran there when the opportunity to try their new Spa and Sparkle package they have available for the festive period presented itself. For £140 you can enjoy the gorgeous spa facilities and enjoy the perfect line up of treatments to get you relaxed and ready for the party season.

On arrival you are taken on their trademark personalised fragrance journey, I really love this element of their treatments as every time I have been I have been in a different mood or wanted to leave feeling a certain way and being able to tailor those emotions to my experience is so unique. You are then led into the stunning treatment rooms for the first part of the treatment which was a glorious and invigorating body scrub. My therapist  Louise started it off with a foot bath and walked me through the procedure, I then got settled on the bed while she used a body brush to boost my circulation before applying the body scrub. When the treatment was all done, not only did I smell heavenly but my skin felt like silk- I was buffed and polished to perfection from head to toe!

Leighton Denny Paparrazi
I was then taken through to their nail bars and treated to a fantastic Leighton Denny manicure and pedicure complete with a glass of fizz that went down a treat! I opted for a bright pink on my fingers and a stunning pin up red on my toes. I never really go for mani's or pedis but I have to say when I have had it done I feel so glam, it really picks up my mood and after these treatments I genuinely wanted to hit the town right then and there, if only it wasn't half 12 on a Saturday afternoon.

After all that pampering you get to make yourself at home in the gorgeous relaxation room with a host of herbal teas and healthy nibbles to enjoy. It is such a soothing place and just being snuggled up in your robe feeling fabulous makes the experience well worth the money. To finish up Louise took my through the Guerlain makeup range and applied my 'touch of colour' which was perfect for getting me ready to hit the busy streets of Edinburgh. I was in love with the lingerie de peau foundation, and she applied the products just as I wanted them- a daytime look that was natural but polished. It is such a good way to end the package and give you that extra boost as you leave.

My little touch of colour after leaving
With nearly 200 years of distinguished work in the field of wellness and beauty, Guerlain knows what it takes to deliver flawless spa experiences and the Spa and Sparkle package is no exception. It is the perfect Christmas gift to yourself or a special person who is in need of quality pampering.
